The overall aim of this work-package is to design and implement methodologies and tools to assess risks and health impacts due to aggregate human exposure to chemicals in consumer products.
Assessments will be concerned with assessing impacts of different policy options or scenarios.

Initial work in this work package will review the current state of the drinking water supply in the EU, with particular reference to water sources, treatment and distribution, and routine and ad-hoc data monitoring of substances in water. Policy scenarios will then be developed on the basis of consultation with both policy-makers in relevant fields (e.g. DG Environment, Water supply companies, consumer groups) and scientists in the relevant disciplines (including geographers, chemists, toxicologist and epidemiologists), with particular references to... read more
WP3.3 Agricultural Land Use
The work will be pursued primarily through a series of case studies, each addressing specific health problems that can be related to environmental and occupational exposure due to agricultural land use. One case study will focus on the effect of environmental contamination from pesticide use on the health of children in the rural environment. A second will explore the effect of agricultural practices and of the social conditions in farming communities on respiratory health of children. A third will assess associations between endotoxin and... read more

Initially, the transport sources to be considered will be selected on the basis both of available data for representative cities/regions of the EU, and possibilities for integrated assessment. A conceptual model will then be developed, specifying the key factors to be addressed and the links between them, the key health impacts and the points in the causal network at which intervention is possible. In close collaboration with SP1 the available exposure-response functions will be identified (first quick scan).

SP3 focuses on the application of the integrated assessment methods developed in SP1, for the analysis of different policy issues. Seven policy areas have been selected, representing issues that differ in terms of their type of policy (structural, sectoral etc), scale of effect (global, national, regional), source activities (industry, transport, agriculture etc), environmental agents (chemicals, noise, heat etc), exposure media (air, water) and settings (ambient, indoor etc). Full assessments of these policy issues will be... read more
