Issue 8: From concept to toolbox. The INTARESE approach

Welcome to the final Issue of the INTARESE Technical Briefs.

The INTARESE project, in collaboration with HEIMTSA, has developed an ‘integrated approach’ to enable the comprehensive assessment of complex health policies related to environmental issues.

The need for a more integrated approach to assessment is increasingly evident. Issues such as climate change, land use management or long-range air pollution cannot be addressed piecemeal, but require collective effort. Policy decisions thus need to be guided by assessments that are much more inclusive in their scope and sophisticated in their approach: assessments that consider all the relevant causal factors, their environmental pathways, interactions and effects. This is the approach that has been developed by INTARESE.

Read more about the different stages of the INTARESE approach to comprehensive assessment of complex health policies related to environmental issues as outlined by the project coordinator Professor David Briggs.

INTARESE has created new ideas and approaches for Integrated Environmental Health Impact Assessmentiii (IEHIA). Therefore, it is important that ways to disseminate, or spread this new thinking to potential users are embedded within the project to enable its eventual use. Effective dissemination of information is also an important part of IEHIA itself as it is vital to engage all those materially affected in a meaningful way as part of the assessment.

Read about the approach taken by Colin Humphris and his team to engage users and disseminate knowledge.
