WP4.1 Toolbox Design

Ref:

The main objective of WP4.1 is to define the functionality and design the structure of the integrated assessment toolbox, on the basis of the needs of users (both within INTARESE and externally), available data and models, and current technical capabilities.

Initial work will focus on defining the information needs, requirements and restrictions laid down both by the other activities in the project, and by potential users in the wider policy and research community. Work will include:

  • close liaison and consultation with partners in other WPs (especially in SP1, SP2, SP3);
  • consultation with external users (via SP6);
  • review and evaluation of other existing (or planned) assessment systems;
  • literature review of other systems, and of surveys of users’ information needs and system requirements.

Based on the results of these activities, an outline specification (requirements report) will be developed, outlining the scope, structure and functionality of the assessment system. This will be discussed and evaluated in consultation with other partners and external users, and refined accordingly. If appropriate, demonstration versions will be developed of key elements of the system, to aid evaluation and discussion of the design. Workshops and focus groups will be organised with the relevant partners and user groups to facilitate the process. Towards the end of phase 1, the general requirements description will be converted into a formal set of outline specifications, defining the system structure, functionality and user interface. Further development of the specifications will occur during phase 2, in response to results from other WPs (including the case studies in SP3).
