SP2 - Monitoring and Surveillance

SP2 focuses on the data and information supply necessary to support integrated environmental and health risk and impact assessment. It aims both to assess information capabilities and, where feasible, enhance and improve these through the development of new monitoring, modelling and surveillance techniques.

Key aims are thus:

  • to specify the information and knowledge requirements needed to implement the specified integrated assessment methodology (as delivered by SP1);
  • review and assess the availability and quality of the existing information, from all available technologies (including environmental monitoring, bio monitoring and health surveillance);
  • bench-test and intercompare the data sources and methods, in order to assess the capability to combine and link them as part of integrated assessment;
  • identify the gaps and weaknesses in existing monitoring and analytical capacity in Europe;
  • in the light of these data issues, advise on the development of the assessment framework and integrated assessment methods (SP1) and the integrated assessment toolbox (SP4);
  • assist other work packages (especially in SP3 and SP4) in accessing and obtaining data, as required;
  • define improved standards and criteria for monitoring and analysis, that will better serve the needs of integrated assessment;
  • develop and test new methodologies for monitoring and modelling, including methods for bio monitoring, data linkage and interoperability.
