The University of Athens Medical School is the largest and oldest Medical School in Greece. The Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology includes 20 faculty members, is responsible for many research projects and produces more than 50 publications annually in peer-reviewed journals. The Department is also responsible for teaching biostatistics, epidemiology and preventive medicine to undergraduate Medical and Dental School students and is responsible for 4 post graduate programmes of the Medical School.
The PI and the research group participating in INTARESE have experience in environmental epidemiology projects. The Participant coordinated the APHEA 1 and projects, which produced results on the short-term effects of air pollution on health (ENV5-CT97-0534; EV5V-CT92-0202) and were used in EC regulations. A recent project was on biomarkers in air pollution exposure and another was an extensive and detailed air pollution exposure study based on personal measurements (ENV4-CT96-0203; ENV4-CT96-0202). Currently, we participate in the E.C. funded studies PHEWE (Assessment and prevention of acute health effects and weather conditions in Europe QLK4-CT-2001-00152), RUPIOH (Relationship between Ultrafine and fine Particulate matter in Indoor and Outdoor air and respiratory Health QLK4-CT-2001-00452), AIRGENE (Air pollution and inflammatory response in myocardial infarction survivors QLK4-CT-2002-02236) and are one of the Principal Contractors in the air pollution network AIRNET (A Thematic Network on Air Pollution and Health QLK4-CT-2001-00441).
Klea Katsouyanni, Associate Professor, has been or is the PI for all the above mentioned projects and is responsible for the post-graduate course in Biostatistics.
This partner will contribute to WP1.3 in selecting dose-response estimates and especially taking into account the heterogeneity and help in identifying gaps. The Partner will also contribute to WPs 3.1 (traffic), through the experience and results from the projects APHEA (air pollution, also traffic related), HYENA (aircraft and traffic noise) and PHEWE (climate related health effects).
