CEFIC manages programmes of research in the health and environmental consequence of the industry’s process and its products. This is known as the Long-range Research Initiative, LRI. Much of this is directed at improving the effectiveness of risk assessment procedures and methodologies. This research is funded in independent research institutions across Europe with the objective of ensuring that the industry both makes a contribution to the developing science base and to ensure the industry is well informed it dialogues with policy makers. As an example it has built on this experience and networks to lead a consortium addressing the information needs for the Commissions REACH proposals.

The key staff member is Colin Humphris Executive Director Research & Science who is responsible for the team that manages the LRI programme, that provided the technical inputs to the Commissions SCALE Technical working Groups and who represents the World Business Council for Sustainable Development on the WHO’s European Environment and Health Committee EEHC which had the role of stewarding the WHO Budapest Conference in June 2004

CEFIC will contribute to INTARESE in a number of ways. It will lead sub-project 5 responsible for the translation of the science into effective tools for policy makers through a combination of user consultation, user evaluation and training ensuring effective feedback into the partners to shape of toolbox for best fit to needs. CEFIC will lead work package 5.1 which is the primary interface with targeted users. It will also contribute to WP5.1 (Integration) and WP6.2 (Dissemination).
