This partner will integrate staff from the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit of the Barcelona Science Park (UTOX-PCB), and from the Toxicology Unit (Faculty of Pharmacy) of the Department of Public Health of the University of Barcelona (UB). Both PCB and UB are part of the University of Barcelona Group (GUB). The senior researchers have been involved for circa 30 years in pharmacotoxicological or ecotoxicological assessment, in projects funded by the Spanish and Catalan Governments and by industry (see under B1). Research connected with INTARESE includes: ecotoxicological field studies, using sentinel species and biomarkers; toxic impact on threatened species using non-invasive biomarkers; effect of toxic stress on development of emergent zoonoses; screening of contaminants in food; molecular epidemiology of cancer: biomarkers of genetic susceptibility; molecular modelling and QSAR: applications in toxicology.
Dr. Miquel Borràs, Head of the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit at the Barcelona Science Park since 2002. Has a previous 14 years experience as Head of Toxicology Department in a pharmaceutical company, and a further 12 years in environmental toxicology research, as a member of the Consolidated Research Team on Vertebrate Biology at the University of Barcelona. He is also Technical Auditor of the Spanish Agency for Accreditation (ENAC) for toxicology laboratories.
Prof. Juan M Llobetis Senior Professor in Toxicology ( University of Barcelona). Since 1976 he teaches in Biochemistry and Toxicology fields. Dr. Jesus Gomez-Catalan is professor in Toxicology. PhD in Chemistry (University of Barcelona, 1989). Specialist in modelling and QSAR. Dr. Jordi Serra-Cobo, Scientific Researcher of the Superior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), and professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris) in the period 1994/95. Is a member of the Vertebrate Biology team, and presently leads the ecological and zoonosis studies in the UTOX-PCB. Mr. Joaquim de Lapuente, Biologist, head researcher at the UTOX-PCB, working in general toxicological assessment and preparing his PhD work on ecotoxicology. Mr. Javier González, Biologist, researcher at the UTOX-PCB, working in general toxicological assessment and preparing his PhD work on genetics.
BSP will contribute to SP2, WP2.2 (Biomonitoring), leading the “agriculture” area and contributing to “water” and “sentinel organisms” ones. We will also participate in WP 4.2 (Toolbox design).
